Subject: IT/SE Paper: Computer Networks (CMPC-5208

Note: Objective Part is Compulsory. Attempt any three Question form Subjective Part.
- Objective Part (Compulsory)
Q.1. Write short answers of the following in 2-3 lines each on your answer sheet. (2*8)
i. Define Protocol and list its three main components. IN
ii. Which layer of the TCP/IP suite is responsible for "process-to-process” delivery?
iii. Identify the difference between a Bridge and a Router.
iv. Define Throughput and how it differs from Bandwidth. .
v. List two advantages of a Star topology over a Bus topology.
vi. What is the purpose of a Port Number in the Transport layer?
vii. Differentiate between Simplex and Full-Duplex communication.
viii. What is the primary function of the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP)?

Q.2. Compare the OSI Model and TCP/IP Model. Explain why the industry prefers the TCP/IP stack.
Q.3. Describe the various Internetworking devices (Hubs, Switches, Routers, Gateways) and explain
at which layer of the OSI model each operates.
Q.4. Explain CIDR and its importance in networking.
Q.5. Analyze the TCP Three-Way Handshake mechanism. Why is it essential for reliable data
transfer?
Q.6. Design a network for a laboratory with 30 computers. Choose a topology, justify your choice,
and explain the physical media (cabling) required.
